Why You Need to Break Up With Your Favorite Celeb
Let's start by saying, not all celebrities are bad and belong in this category. We have to admit, we all have a favorite Hollywood A, B, C lister or two that we follow, like, and maybe financially support.
They invite us into their lives, homes, and routines through tv, social media, and podcasts. Sometimes it's like we're listening to or catching up with a friend. That is okay. What is not okay is allowing their views on health and fitness to impact your life.
Over the years, celebrities have been called out for their retouching of photos, promoting unhealthy products, and not telling the real story of how they keep their bodies "small, smooth and perfect." We put these words in quotation as a reminder that they are buzz words, clickbait, used to make you react. The trend that is happening now through podcasts or social media is far more dangerous than the #AD you usually see. It is the subliminal messages that will hurt us and, most notably, our youth.
Look for the red flags.
Instagram Stories that are not sponsored but share their workout routine or new diet they are on.
Listen, we all have goals, resolutions, or things we would like to accomplish for 2021. It is the nature of resetting the calendar year. When you see or hear a message that their goal is to complete two workouts a day or eat a certain way or stop drinking for January. That is a decision they made for themselves and is not something you should consider copying to get a quick fix.
Instead, try understanding what your body needs for movement or wants for nutrition. Listen to the signals your body is telling you and follow that intuition. For more serious decision making, consult with your physician first. Ads, promoted products, emails, etc., are meant to have one end goal. Increase revenue for that product. It's time to stop wasting money on health and wellness products you may not need. (That includes supplements and vitamins.)
They speak negatively about their bodies.
Negative body talk comes and goes, but it is not the public's place to fix the celebrity's image of themselves. Although you may not have an immediate effect, this could still pop up later for you.
What we can do is appreciate those who share with honesty, integrity, and solutions to change their own conversation.
Their podcasts content does not align with the ads they are promoting.
If you are listening to a podcast done by said favorite celeb and the advertisements, promote a brand that doesn't align with the content the podcaster is speaking about. They are doing a poor job of protecting their listeners (and brand). Podcast advertisers pay to have their ad read by your favorite podcaster. That doesn't mean your favorite celeb is using that product. It merely means they are being paid to talk about it. (We will not knock anyone for working for a paycheck.) BUT as a clear reminder to yourself that you have the right to choose who and what you listen to. Your time is just as valuable as the person recording it. If they can't take the time to select the right brands to align with, it may show that they care less bout the listeners.
Even if you're not ready for a full breakup, just like any relationship, keep an eye on the red flags.
Your fitness and health journey starts with you. Not someone else's image. You have the control to align yourself with the right people, to set and your goals up for success this week, this month, this year, or heck maybe even next decade. The great power is knowing, it’s all in your hands.
