5 Books For Dad’s
By Hannah Dendas of naptime book review
I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by wonderful Fathers and I love giving books as gifts so here are a few I’m considering gifting this year.
1. Devil in the White City
by Erik Larson
I have to include this one because it is one of my husband’s favorite books and one that we still talk about even though we both read it years ago. It follows the events surrounding the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago from two very different perspectives: the Fair’s architect, Daniel H. Burnham, and a serial killer masquerading as a doctor. It seems like an odd combination but it works. The book is filled with interesting historical tidbits (like the invention of the Ferris Wheel) and the search for the killer will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Nonfiction
Price: $16
2. A Gentleman in Moscow
by Amor Towles
Now that we’re coming out of the pandemic, now is probably an ok time to read a book about someone in isolation. It is a beautifully written tale of a Russian Count who is sentenced to house arrest in a hotel in Moscow in the 1920s. While the Count’s whole life revolves around the people he interacts with in the hotel, life goes on through tumultuous decades in Moscow. Human behavior and emotional connection feature much more prominently than explosive plot elements but the relationships within the hotel will keep you reading. Subtle humor throughout the book balances out any heaviness.
Fiction
Price: $17
3. Into Thin Air
by Jon Krakauer
Last month was the 25th anniversary of the disastrous summit attempt on Mt Everest that is chronicled in this book. Krakauer writes an honest and balanced account of the bad decisions and bad luck that contributed to the deaths of 5 climbers among his group. A must-read for any outdoorsy explorers or just armchair explorers.
Nonfiction
Price: $16
4. Unbroken
by Laura Hillenbrand
This is the remarkable true story of Louis Zamperini, Olympic runner turned Air Force pilot who finds himself adrift in a liferaft in the Pacific Ocean after his plane goes down during World War II. You won’t believe what Louis endures throughout the book. His story is the ultimate example of the will to survive, hope, and the human spirit.
Nonfiction
Price: $17
5. This Tender Land
by William Kent Kruger
Fans of Huck Finn will love this adventurous story set during the Great Depression. There is plenty of action and many touching moments as two young brothers flee their orphanage after a tragic event. As they travel the river toward what they hope will be freedom they are forced to learn many hard lessons on survival, trust, and loyalty. One of the best books I’ve read recently!
Historical fiction
